Frequently Asked Questions
1. How often do I need to water my terrarium?
Closed terrariums are self-sustaining and rarely need watering. You can mist your terrarium with distilled water once or twice a month. Please note, the need to water will decrease over time as the plants establish and the terrarium creates its own water cycling. If there is a lot of condensation and the soil is very moist, no need to water. If you notice the soil is dry or the plants are wilting, mist the terrarium with distilled water.
2. Should I open my terrarium to let it air out?
If excess condensation builds up and the glass becomes too foggy, you can open the terrarium for a few hours to let some moisture escape. However, condensation is normal and part of the natural cycle.
3. How much light does my terrarium need?
Place the terrarium under a grow light for 6-9 hours a day. Most grow lights have timer settings that will turn your light on and off automatically every day at set interval. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can overheat and scorch the plants.
4. What should I do if I see mold or fungus?
Mold is normal and can develop if there’s too much moisture on the driftwood, it’s not harmful, more of an eye sore. Springtails (tiny beneficial bugs) & sometimes isopods are added to terrariums upon construction to help keep mold under control naturally. You can also let the terrarium air out for a day or use a q-tip to remove the mold.
5. Why are my plants turning yellow or rotting?
Overwatering can cause plant rot. If you notice yellowing or mushy stems, remove affected plants, let the terrarium dry out slightly, and ensure it’s not too wet inside.
6. Do I need to fertilize my terrarium plants?
No, fertilizing is not recommended, as it can cause plants to outgrow the space too quickly. The closed system recycles nutrients naturally. Worm castings as well as a root hormone were added to the terrariums when originally constructed.
7. What are the tiny jumping bugs in my terrarium?
Springtails are tiny, beneficial insects that help prevent mold and break down organic matter, keeping your ecosystem healthy. They will stay contained in the terrarium, and won’t infest your home.
8. What happens if my terrarium gets too dry?
If you notice no condensation for several days and the plants look dry, mist lightly with distilled or rainwater. Avoid using tap water, as it can cause mineral buildup.
9. Can I trim my plants if they grow too big?
Yes! Prune back any overgrown leaves or stems with clean scissors to maintain the shape and balance of your terrarium.
10. Do I need to feed my carnivorous plants?
Carnivorous plants require minimal feeding. They will naturally consume some springtails (included in your terrarium) for nutrition, but you can supplement their diet with a carnivorous plant food spray or occasionally introduce a small gnat into the terrarium if desired.
11. Is my terrarium too hot/cold?
Keep the terrarium in a stable environment, ideally between 60°F and 80°F.
12. How long will my terrarium last?
With proper care, a well-balanced terrarium can thrive for years, and some have even lasted for decades! While these terrariums are designed to be low-maintenance, they are living ecosystems. Plant death is a natural part of the cycle and may occur over time.
Moss Terrariums
1. How often do I need to water my terrarium?
Rarely. Moss thrives in humid environments, and closed terrariums recycle moisture. Only mist if the moss looks dry or brittle, or if no condensation appears for a few days.
2. How much light does my terrarium need?
Adjust your grow light brightness to the lowest level of brightness by clicking the +/- button. Extend your grow light up so it’s hovering above the terrarium, not sitting directly on top of it. Set the grow light timer to 3-9 hours a day. Your light will turn on and off automatically every day at set interval. Always avoid direct sunlight.
3. Why is my moss turning brown?
This is usually due to:
Too much light – Make sure your grow light brightness to the lowest level of brightness by clicking the +/- button.
Too little humidity – Mist lightly with distilled water.
4. My moss looks faded or gray—what’s wrong?
This is likely due to dehydration. Lightly mist with distilled water.
How to use your grow light
Choose the perfect spot for your terrarium! *Avoid placing it in a window with direct sunlight, as this can dry out the moss or overheat the plants.
To set up your grow light:
Plug the light into an outlet.
Press the power button to turn it on.
Press the timer button twice to set the light to automatically turn on at the same time every day for 9 hours.
Once set, the light will turn on and off automatically each day!
